Own projects

My CV

This is the first project i created. Its goal is to present my Curriculum Vitae in a different, more interesting way than the standard application. The blue colour intends to symbolize professionalism (or it rather pretends it...). I reduced my personal data as far as possible, so the main ideas are easy to detect. Likewise, i resigned decoration to avoid the reader will be distracted. Redundancy should be eliminated because of the limited space available in a CV. Though, the background could appear a little bit to dense and the font size too small.

A statistic of airplane crash fatalities

For my second project i was asked to interpret some data about air crashs in the last decades. My main idea was to distinguish on a world map where the highest amount of air crashes with fatalities took place. This is symbolized by red colour, representing the danger and deadliness of those flights. Furthermore, a introduced the variable fatalities per flight, because the pure number of airplane accidents in a country gives any conclusion about the amount of fatalities.

The background is kept very simple and clear, using only white. Similarly, i used a straight font. As a feature, i implemented some decoration which relates to airplanes, like the airplanes' rear, added to the bar chart, little airplane shapes in the corners of the tables, and the crosses, which represents the number of fatalities per flight, but look like an airplane at the same time. Additionally, the font in the map shall appear like the typical green one used in radars.

The Boston Gardner Heist

For my third project i depicted a famous art theft in the Gardner Museum in Boston, 1990. The thieves' procedure is depicted as arrows on the ground view of the museum. Bubbles containing information about the stolen goods are connected to it. Additionally, the procedure in short texts. Edited data about art robberies in the las decades is added on the right side, calles Side Gallery. This graphic is due to the topic more decorative and contains many references to art, as the picture frames, the half-transparent background of a stolen Vermeer's painting and the bar of stolen works on the left. Because of its yellow colour, the heading may appear a little bit fuzzy.

The Liquidity Trap in GIIPS

My fourth project treats a quite complex topic: The high unemployment situation in Greece, Italy, Ireland, Portugal and Spain and why the counter-actions of the European Central (ECB) bank don't seem to work.
First of all, i explained the main idea of the ECB giving low main refinancing rates using a quite simple graphic and easy to identify symbols like a bank building and notes. Arrows figurate the interdependences of the participating actors. Nevertheless, text was not avoidable to make sure the graphic is interpreted well. Furthermore, i included a graph which shows the short-term ECB actions don't show an obviousneffect on the unemployment rate right now.

  1. Regarding your CV graphic I really like the variety of elements you use in your information graphic - timeline, map, bubble chart, donut chart and bar chart. Including a QR-code is a great idea for interaction with the viewer for getting further information. That seems quite novel to me, because it is not used very often in info graphics. Your color concept could be more complex for taking advantage from distinguishing the different segments visually - I think that would improve the readability. In my opinion you should also use different shades of blue in the timeline to visually support the reference of the numbers. I think color coding is a great chance to visually guide the viewer.

  2. Hey Lisa,
thanks for your advice. I totally agree with you using different shades of blue to make the connection to the enumeration of life stations more properly. I tried to keep it simple and limit the use of colours. I implemeted thin grey lines to divide the segments. Perhaps i should draw them clearer.
